Kayla Moody: then and now

Indianapolis native. Award-winning journalist. Freelance designer.

It was shortly after Hurricane Katrina that Kayla first developed her passion for news. She packed a camera in her luggage on the first of several mission trips to the storm-ravaged Gulf Coast and interviewed the people she met along the way. The stories of those who lost everything were deeply humbling and left a profound imprint on her life. She felt compelled toward a career in which she could bring those stories to the masses.

Kayla currently works for WEVV (CBS/FOX44) in Evansville, Ind. as morning anchor and the executive producer of the station's morning newscasts. She enjoys waking up with the Tri-State each morning and helping folks start their day with 44News This Morning.

Kayla came to Evansville from WHAS-TV in Louisville, where she anchored and reported for three years. During her time in Louisville, Kayla anchored the station's weekend evening newscasts and covered a wide variety of stories in the Kentuckiana area, often with a focus on politics. Some of her most memorable stories include the funeral of Muhammad Ali, the massive fire at Whiskey Row, and stories from an enterprise series she created called "The Vault".

Kayla began her broadcasting career at WEHT/WTVW in Evansville, Ind. where she covered Western Kentucky, Southwestern Indiana, and Southern Illinois. There, her reporting work launched her into the position of weekend anchor/producer, and eventually an anchoring role in the weekday 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. newscasts.

Kayla served as WEHT's Lead Political Reporter, where she quickly became the newsroom's go-to person for "all things politics". She coordinated election coverage for all three states and covered city, state, and national politics. Some of her most memorable moments come from her live coverage of President Barack Obama's visit to Gibson County, Ind., traveling around the Bluegrass State following the full-contact 2014 McConnell-Grimes match-up, and talking with everyday voters about the issues that matter to them most in a traveling political segment called, "Voice of the Voter".

Kayla's work as a reporter and producer has been recognized by the Indiana chapters of the Society of Professional Journalism and Associated Press. In April 2015 one of her reports was awarded a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award, one of the most distinguished honors in broadcast television. The hard-hitting piece looked inside the loopholes of protective orders. It was told through the firsthand experience of a domestic violence victim.

Kayla developed her skills at Ball State University where she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications and Journalism Graphics. During her time in Muncie, Kayla anchored and reported for NewsLink Indiana, the university's student-run broadcast news station. She also co-hosted a talk show on WCRD, Ball State's campus radio station.

While in college, Kayla also worked part-time as a contracted employee for Eli Lilly and Company, a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Indianapolis. She began her stint there as a temporary hire, but was soon signed on as a freelance graphic designer for more than four years.

Kayla grew up on the west side of Indianapolis in the town of Avon, where much of her family still resides. When she's not working, Kayla enjoys working out and spending time with her friends and family. She and her husband, Philip, married in April 2018. Kayla loves spending time with Philip and her two stepchildren, Meredith and Jonathon. Together they spend lots of time tending to their black lab (Apollo), cat (Evander), and two goldfish (Starbucks and Treasure). Kayla is a former collegiate runner who loves working out and being outside. She also enjoys baking and crafting, often making homemade treats and creations for friends and co-workers.
